After the Gunners were held by Sporting Lisbon in a thrilling first leg of the Europa League last-16, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, declared that his team must "improve substantially" if they are to keep winning games.

With a powerful header, French defender William Saliba gave the Premier League's top team the lead. Nevertheless, Sporting took advantage of shaky defending to score two goals either side of halftime through Goncalo Inacio and Paulinho.
